• About Me

My name (obviously) is Kyle Hall. I'm what most people would call a computer security geek.

Professionally:

Currently I work for a very large telecommunications company as a Network Security Engineer. I have a Bachelor’s degree in telecommunications and am currently attending graduate school to earn a Master's in Computer Security from DePaul University. I am also GCIA and GPEN certified (GIAC Certified Intrusion Analyst and Penetration Tester).

Note that my resume is intentionally left out of date for confidentiality reasons. If you would like a more recent copy, please email me.

Personally:

I’ve spent most of my life on a computer and a better majority of it on the internet. I’ve been known to have a network more complex than some small ISPs may have. The difference being that mine is run out of my bedroom. And that, well, I don’t get paid for it.

Until recently, I ran my own website (apache), phone service (asterisk) and email service (postfix). As you can probably imagine, this takes quite a large amount of time. I’ve decided to simplify things a bit now. While my website is still run from home, my voip phone now connects directly to the service provider and my email is run by google. ;]

  • About My Computers

I've recently gone through an effort to simplify my network in order to make my life easier. It occured to me that I was spending so much time administering the systems I'd built that I rarely had any time to use them.

  • sv - OpenSuSE 11 - General Server

This server does nearly everything on my network:

    • DHCP
    • Dynamic DNS
    • LDAP authentication
    • Web Server
    • Router
    • Firewall

The DHCP and DNS server both store their configuration in LDAP. I've set up samba as a windows DC which stores it's configuration in LDAP as well. Now all my windows machines authenticate as part of the domain too.

  • vm - OpenSuSE 11 - VMWare Server 2

Due to ESXi's incredibly specific hardware requirements, I've gone with VMWare Server 2 for this machine. I'm running guests including Windows 2003 server, 2008 server as well as various linux guests.

  • gate - DD-WRT - WiFi Router

Most people wouldn't really classify this as an actual server, but with the amount of time that I have spent working on it, I feel it should be included ;]

See? Simple.
